Hanna Jarzabek (1976, Poland). She finished a Master degree in Political Science and worked on refugee reports for UN agencies such as UNRWA and UNCTA. She developed her passion for photography while travelling (the Gaza Strip, Iran, Philippines).
Since 2008 she is based in Spain where she works as a freelance photojournalist, combining her personal projects with the teaching of photography. She has published in BuzzFeed News, El Pais, XL Semanal, L'Obs, Equal Times, 5W magazine, Interviú, El Periódico de Cataluña, 7k magazine, Gazeta Wyborcza and Polityka among others.
Her projects address discrimination and societal dysfunctions in western society, with an emphasis on themes such as gender identity and sexual diversity. She also works on youth radicalization and the raise of right-wing movements in Europe. Lately she has started to investigate the construction of national identity in post-Soviet regions in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union.
She has won several awards, such as the XX University of Murcia Photography Award (2021) and the Third Prize of POY Latam 2015 (Mexico), in the multimedia category. She received the Honorable Mention from the Marylin Stafford Fotoreportage Award (UK 2021) and was selected among the Futures Talents 2020 in the Futures Photography UE program. She was awarded the S.OS. Arte / Cutlura VEGAP 2021, grant from the DESVÍO - Hablar en Arte program (Madrid 2021) and grant from the European Journalism Center (2020). She was also awarded the Crisálida Signo Editores Program scholarship (2019), the Helge Humelvoll scholarship from the 69th Missouri Photo Workshop (2017, United States) and the GrisArt Photojournalism Scholarship (2015). She was selected as a finalist for the Grand Press Photo Poland 2019; nominated in the 2018 and 2017 edition of the Photography Grant of Photography Magazine (London 2017); selected as a finalist in CROSS VIDEO DAYS (Paris 2014) and in the 19th FotoPres la Ciaxa (2013), among others.
